Galway Technical Institute is the largest provider of ERASMUS+ placements in Ireland. Each year two out of every 25 students at GTI get the opportunity to avail of a fully funded work placement.
Students travel to different countries around Europe which include Finland, Malta, Spain, & Turkey. Each work placement is for between two and four weeks. This truly unique opportunity allows students to gain valuable real-life work experience in their chosen career area. |

ERASMUS+ provides funding to Irish Vocational Education and Training organisations to carry out a wide range of projects, including sending learners and/or staff for vocational training placements in another country or cooperating with other organisations to meet common challenges in innovative ways.
Galway Technical Institute first received funding for student mobility under the Leonardo da Vinci programme in 2009. In that year, almost €24k was used to fund six participants. The following year, this number had increased to 47 and a year later this had doubled to 100. In 2014, GTI received a two-year ERASMUS+ Key Action 1 Grant of €534k which funds close to 200 student placements. This year students will take part in two, three or four week placements all across Europe. The placements help the students develop their skills as they work toward Level 5 and 6 qualifications in areas such as Fashion, Business, Art and Sport.
The students’ blogs will give you an idea of the key skills the students have developed, and also how travelling to other places within Europe has broadened perceptions of culture and history.

VET Mobility CharterGTI was one of the first PLC colleges in Ireland to be awarded the Erasmus+ Mobility Charter by Léargas. This Charter recognised the operational capacity of GTI to plan, manage and implement high quality mobility projects for learners and staff.
Studies show that a period spent abroad not only enriches students’ lives in the academic field but also in the acquisition of intercultural skills and self-reliance. Staff exchanges have similar beneficial effects, both for the people participating and for the home and host institutions. |
